Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses—the air-filled cavities around your nose and eyes. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (lasting 12+ weeks).
Common symptoms include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, thick yellow or green discharge, reduced sense of smell, headache, and fatigue. Fever may occur with acute sinusitis.
Causes include viral infections (most common), bacterial infections, allergies, nasal polyps, or a deviated septum. Environmental irritants like smoke can worsen symptoms.
Home care: Steam inhalation, saline nasal rinses, staying hydrated, and over-the-counter decongestants can help mild cases. Rest and warm compresses may ease discomfort.
See a doctor if symptoms last more than 10 days, worsen after initial improvement, you have severe headache or facial swelling, or vision changes. Chronic or recurrent sinusitis may need ENT evaluation and imaging.
